As we begin to take steps to make this verse a reality for our family, I encourage you to read these words for yourself and see how they impact you. Not only do I want to save myself, but I also want to make sure that those I love see an example of how to live a real life of true purpose and meaning. A real gauge for me is if my life continually causes me to return to Him for guidance or if I’m happy to just set the cruise control and only get directions when I’m really lost or desperate. I’m finding that I’m doing much better the more I have to say, “I really need Your help on this one, because I can’t do this alone.”
Do you sacrifice to the point of needing help or are things going so swimmingly that you find yourself comfortable with your own efforts?
For those of you who want to go a little deeper, here’s a larger excerpt:
Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat; I am. Don't run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I'll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?
Mark 8:34-37
